About Our Coffee

At Amani, the rich coffee we serve you is reflective of our family history. 

While at the family village on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Edward once sat with his relatives and enjoyed a Xmas meal of Mbuzi Choma (roasted goat). During this meal, Edward noticed that he was surrounded by coffee trees. 

As these trees made him feel uncomfortable, he began to cut down a few of the coffee leaves so he could feel more at ease. However, this action did not go down well with grandfather Mzee Alois Markshaka. 

The grandfather began to tell Edward and his brothers the significance of the coffee. He explained how their coffee trees had been feeding them for years, and enabled their father Justice Mrosso (retired) to go to university. This path led to him becoming a judge for 40 years in the High Court and Court of Appeal; all before Lilian and Edward were born! 

From that moment on, Edward never forgot about the importance of this coffee. Now, his Amani office is filled with the aroma of coffee 24/7, and this evocative smell has remained an important reminder of his family history.  

Coffee Estate Tour

Come on the daily, guided walking, horseback or cycling tour from Monday to Friday at 11h30, to discover Amani’s historic coffee plantation. One of our experienced gardeners will be your guide on this tour, during which we encourage guests to pick, taste, smell and touch while walking through our fields.

Unless you are a guest staying at Amani Safari Lodge, an entrance fee is required for access to our coffee fields. The entrance fee is around $15 and is payable at the front desk.

In every town, there are a few gems – delightful places off the beaten path that give you a sense of the soul of the town. Khan’s BBQ which is only 1.9 km from Amani Safari Lodge is undoubtedly one of the key gems in Arusha, and while it’s been discovered, it’s still the real deal. Tasty salads, Zanzibar pizzas, garlic naan, barbecued chicken, beef mishkaki and mutton shish kabob are all-stars. Even the passion juice is top-notch. But Khan’s serves up more than an evening out – it’s the kind of place that you’ll always remember when you think of Arusha.

Local cafés

Msumbi Cafe is only 3 min drive from Amani Safari Lodge and it is a great spot to pick up a to-go cappuccino or an americano and a slice of apple pie to take on the road. The atmosphere is super cozy and perfect for relaxing after wandering around the city. The menu is simple and delicious, offering a range of sandwiches, salads, sambusas and small cakes like apple tarts, muffins etc. Try the passion juice and date bread, they are simply delicious.
